Hiring Forms:Background Check Release and Investigation Form
Police & Communications Departments:
  • APPLICATION - Candidates submit applications online.  Applications will be reviewed to see if candidate meets basic qualifications.
  • BACKGROUND CHECK - Candidate will be notified to complete a release form to allow an investigation into reference checks, credentials, driving records, criminal history, drug use, and credit reporting.
  • DOCUMENTATION - Candidates will be asked to provide documentation of POST certification, training certificates, and military DD-214 along with the background check form.
  • TESTING PROCESS - Testing dates are typically on the 4th Saturday of the month.  Candidates will be notified of the testing date and will participate in a written exam and a physical ability exam. 
    • Written Test (4-part exam) - An aggregate score of 70% is the minimum acceptable score.  
    • Physical Ability - A passing score of 70% is mandatory.  (This test is not required for Communications Officers.)
    • Oral Interview - If candidates successfully complete both exams, they will be asked to participate in an oral interview with the hiring committee on that same day.  An aggregate score of 70% on the oral interview is mandatory.
  • REVIEW - The hiring committee makes a recommendation which is thoroughly reviewed by the Command Staff.
  • COMMAND STAFF INTERVIEW - Candidate will have a final formal interview with the Command Staff.
  • POLYGRAPH - Top candidate(s) will be asked to complete a polygraph, which must be passed to move forward in the process.
  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION - Candidate will be notified to complete an in-depth background investigation form.
  • EMPLOYMENT OFFER - With approval from the Board of Aldermen, the Chief gives a verbal conditional employment offer that is followed up with a formal written offer from Human Resources.
  • PRE-EMPLOYMENT TESTING - The conditional job offer is contingent upon successful completion of a psychological exam, drug test, physical exam, and finger-print background check.
  • APPOINTMENT - If the pre-employment testing is successfully completed, the candidate will be appointed to their position at the next available Board of Aldermen meeting.
Fire Department:
  • APPLICATION - Candidates submit applications online.  Applications will be reviewed to see if candidate meets basic qualifications.
  • BACKGROUND CHECK - Candidate will be notified to complete a release form to allow an investigation into reference checks, credentials, driving records, criminal history, drug use, and credit reporting.
  • DOCUMENTATION - Candidates will be asked to provide results from a current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) as well as current results from a Fire Service Entrance Exam (FSEE).  Candidates will be asked to provide proof of an EMS License, Hazmat Operations certificate, and military DD-214.
  • FORMAL INTERVIEW - Top candidates are asked to meet for a formal interview.
  • CHIEF INTERVIEW - Final candidates are asked to meet for a formal interview.
  • EMPLOYMENT OFFER - With approval from the Board of Aldermen, the Chief gives a verbal conditional employment offer that is followed up with a formal written offer from Human Resources.

General Employees:

  • FORMAL INTERVIEW - Top candidates are asked to meet for a formal interview.
  • BACKGROUND CHECK - Candidate completes a release form to allow an investigation into reference checks, credentials, driving records, or credit reporting .  The type of investigation methods used will vary depending on position.
  • EMPLOYMENT OFFER - With approval from the Board of Aldermen, the Department Director gives a verbal conditional employment offer that is followed up with a formal written offer from Human Resources.
  • PRE-EMPLOYMENT TESTING - The conditional job offer is contingent upon successful completion of a drug test, physical exam, and finger-print background check.
  • APPOINTMENT - If the pre-employment testing is successfully completed, the candidate will be appointed to their position at the next available Board of Aldermen meeting.
