Business License Application

Riverside welcomes new businesses and appreciates its existing corporate neighbors.  Each business operating or providing a service in Riverside, Missouri, is required to have a City Business License. The Community Development Department is here to help you through the process of licensing your business with the City.
New Business RequirementsTo obtain a business license for a new business physically located in Riverside please complete the following steps.

  • Step 1 - Check with the Community Development Department to ensure the property is appropriately zoned for your intended business.
  • Step 2 - Submit your completed application form (form available below) and fee to the Community Development Department.  Please note, if your business includes retail sales, a State of Missouri Sales Tax Number is required.
  • Step 3 - Schedule an inspection of the property with the Fire Marshall (816-372-9211).  All utilities must be connected prior to the inspection.

Once these steps have been successfully completed your business license will be mailed to you.
Business License RenewalEach calendar year existing businesses are required to renew their business license.  In November the City will send a renewal notice and application form.  Simply complete the form and return it along with the business license fee to City Hall, 2950 NW Vivion Road, Riverside, MO  64150.  If the renewal is not received by February 1 penalties will be assessed.
Licensed Contractors / Businesses Not Physically Located in RiversideIf you are operating a business or providing a service in Riverside, but your business is not physically located in Riverside, please submit your completed application form (available below) and fee to the Community Development Department.   Businesses Relocating within Riverside

Business license fees for new businesses are prorated on a quarterly basis.

STATE AND FEDERAL REQUIREMENTSMissouri Sales Tax Number

If your business will be involved in direct sales of merchandise to the public, you are required by both State and City laws to have a Missouri Sales Tax Number. You may obtain an application for your Missouri Sales Tax Number at the State Office Building, 615 East 13th Street, Room 127, Kansas City, Missouri, or by calling (816) 889-2944.

Fictitious Name Registration

Registration of a fictitious name may be made with the Missouri Secretary of State, State Office Building, 615 East 13th Street, Kansas City, Missouri, or you may call (816) 889-2925.

Registering as an Employer

Every business employing people is subject to State withholding taxes for those individuals. To obtain information regarding withholding tax, you may call the Missouri Revenue Department at ( 816) 889-2944. The office is located in the State Office Building, in Kansas City.Federal Employer ID Number
Each business employing people is also required to apply for a Federal employer identification number. A number may be obtained by calling (512) 462-7843 or you may call 1-800-829-1040 for forms or more information.
